Men’s Health

While women’s conditions have been given significant attention in both the medical field (as seen from the huge Gynaecology branch) and in mainstream conversations, men’s health haven’t had as much attention or public outreach, which is a disadvantage to men.

In this article, our Urologist with a special interest in Men’s Health talks about some common conditions faced by men:

01

Erectile Dysfunction & Impotence

02

Low Testosterone

04

Premature Ejaculation

Did you know that many of these conditions are actually interconnected and interdependent?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a condition where a man finds it difficult to achieve or maintain a satisfactory erection long enough for sexual activity. For many men, this is a deeply frustrating and embarrassing problem, and unfortunately the stress felt further worsens the condition.

After all, erectile dysfunction can be caused by both medical and psychological issues:

01

Stress & Anxiety

  • Also known as performance anxiety – the more stress felt, the worse one performs
  • Mental illnesses such as depression or PTSD can be contributing factors
02

Low Testosterone

  • This usually comes with age, as men’s testosterone levels start to dip
  • Testosterone is the male sex hormone that controls male reproductive and sexual function; as such it can easily lead to issues of impotence and even male infertility
03

Prostate Enlargement & Prostate Cancer

  • Patients suffering from Prostate Enlargement & Cancer often experience ED as well due to some of the treatments used, which can lead to diminished libido
04

Chronic Disease & Unhealthy Lifestyle

  • Obesity, high blood pressure and high cholesterol can lead to lowered testosterone levels, in spite of young age
  • Smoking: One of many harmful things that cigarettes do is that they damage the linings of blood vessels
  • An erection is only achieved when the arteries in the penis expands and fills with blood, so this effectively hinders that process.

Male fertility is also compromised when many of the reasons above happens – if a man leads an unhealthy or stressful lifestyle, or has certain medical problems, his sperm quality will be affected; if a man suffers from low testosterone, his sperm count will be greatly affected as testosterone is crucial for healthy sperm production, and it leads to ED as well which prevents him from easily impregnating his partner. Premature ejaculation (PE) is uncontrolled ejaculation either shortly after or even before sexual penetration, and long before the person intends to. Though it is a different condition from ED, they do share similar causes: stress and anxiety, hormonal problems, certain medications and medical conditions. A big factor is also hypersensitivity. However, all this can be managed through the use of behavioural therapy, lifestyle changes and medication.
